REPORTS TO THE BOARD
Student ReportKurtis Patterson reported that the start of the school year went well. He said there are a lot more staff and students. Football started last week. All the other sports (soccer, volleyball and cross country) start tomorrow. Homecoming is in a few weeks. Jim Bays asked when the Homecoming game will be. Kurtis said it would be October 10th.
SUPERINTENDENT REPORT
Michael Green said school started really well. Kindergarteners started today. PTSA sponsored Coffee, Tea and Tissues, as a good start for families to learn more about WPS. Steven provided a building tour, also. There were a lot of ELL families that came. Stacy Brown and Michael worked on enrollment numbers. The District is up 18.6 FTE above what was budgeted. The budget already had a “Pad” for Kindergarten students in case we had higher than expected enrollment. We did not staff an associated Kindergarten teaching position, so the initial look at enrollment, our primary fiscal driver, is positive. Eighth grade enrollment is up, and one student was turned away due to lack of space.
CORRESPONDENCE
None.
CITIZENS REQUESTS
BOARD REPORTS & REQUESTS
Matt Donald asked about the air system at the Intermediate School, as he had visited the school last week and noticed that all the classrooms had fans to circulate the air. The Board discussed this and decided to have Michael add this as an agenda item at another meeting. Matt also said that he had noticed the paint is weathering on the west side of the Primary School, and wanted to know if it would be painted. Michael said that he would discuss that with Bill Hanson.
DISCUSSION ITEMS
First Reading of Revisions to Policy No. 3241- Classroom Management or Corrective ActionsAttorney, Buzz Porter, reviewed the new laws regarding Classroom Management or Corrective Actions. He made recommendations based on changes to state law. The word “punishment” must be deleted from all policies. Jim Bays asked if the word “discipline” should be under the Unexcused Absences section on page 3. Michael said he would review that section. Jim also wondered about the “council” that was mentioned in the policy on page 6. Michael said that it refers to a review council that may or may not be the Board, as they prefer. Jim said that he thinks that should be deleted, as he feels that the Board should be the review council for appeals. He also said that he didn’t think the appeal response time should be longer than the parent’s time to get the appeal to the District. Michael said it was in the best interest of the District to have the times as they are in the policy. Michael said he would make any corrections necessary for the next reading.
First Reading of Revisions to Policy No. 2410-High School Graduation RequirementsThis revision includes the new requirements that the State Board of Education adopted this summer for classes 2019 and beyond. The format has changed for clarification. Jim Bays said that he thought that the Board would discuss the decision by Administrators to keep the Culminating Project, as part of the District requirements. The Board decided to move forward with the policy and add an item to a future agenda for discussion of the Culminating Project piece.
