I am pleased to update you this month about our Special Ed Transition Program that we have created and partnered with ESD112 Specialized Student Services Cooperative for our special education young adults 18-21 years of age. The program focuses on creating independent life skills, functioning academics and learning to be an employee for those students who have significant developmental disabilities and require services after turning 18. We have 5 students currently in the program: 2 from Woodland, 1 from Kalama and 2 from La Center. They attend school on the Woodland MS campus from 9:00-2:30 daily. Students are transported to various job sites, community settings, and leisure activities each day.
Job sites include:
Ace Hardware
Corwin Beverages
Woodland Community Center
L & J Feed
Parks & Recreation-Paradise State Park
Woodland Preschool
The Barn" (owned by the Peterson's) students work out and provide custodial duties
Staffing consists of the following:
The ESD employees have worked for many years with these students and we are very lucky to have such highly trained IA's to work with this group.
Our high school Print Shop is being operated by this group of young adults. They have been learning to run the machine and make deliveries independently. This is being run as an on-site, job training experience. Students are to fill requests and make deliveries. This week they are also starting an interior auto detailing business for WSD staff. They will rotate between buildings on Fridays to provide this service.
In working with ESD it appears that this program could double this next year based on our projections. We are very excited about having this opportunity in our community and appreciate our job site partners immensely. So far the students and staff have fallen into a nice routine which should be credited to D'Ann for spending tons of time this summer preparing curriculum and meeting with ESD, Kalama & La Center staff, students and families. She has passionately embraced this chance to create the program and run with it!!
