RE: WPS MONTHLY UPDATE
Continued Common Core Training – Math
A demonstrated example of just what a shift is required of our schools as we prepare to fully transition to Common Core Standards, is our ongoing Math-related professional development. Grade levels are currently field-testing pieces of Common Core aligned Math Curriculum. These are “Open Educational Resources” meaning they are wholly accessible via the internet and do not require purchase.
A focus of learning the Common Core Standards is allowing our teachers to spend time increasing their knowledge and preparedness in Math content as opposed to simply presenting instructional practices to students. This speaks to the “deeper, more thorough” expectations being required by the Common Core Standards
In addition to releasing whole grade levels together to engage in this training, a good portion of our Monday Morning Professional Development is spent in this arena.
Thank you, teaching staff!
Woodland has Talent!
Woodland Primary took over the High School Auditorium on a Friday in February to “show our stuff” to families, and students. 22 Talent Show Acts performed a variety of acts which included signing, piano playing, a unique “cup act,” and a wrestling demonstration! Fun was had by all as the auditorium had over 100 cheering supporters!
The following Friday, we ended our school week by inviting 10 of the acts to perform for our entire school – good job, WPS!
Kindergartner Families Registering
Local Pre-Schools (St. Phillips, HeadStart, and Parent Co-op) are all visiting our school this week. These Field Trips host students preparing for Kindergarten next year, and provide their parents a reminder of our upcoming Kindergarten Registration in March.
We enjoy hosting future students and their parents. A highlight of the visit for many, is the free ride on the big yellow schoolbus!
*Kindergarten Registration is the week of March 10-14!*
