Here are the CTE highlights from the past month.
Leadership Community Service Project: Students are currently raising funds to make paracord bracelets to send to our troops. Fundraising events are: Snowflake Ball, Burgerville Partnership Night, Teacher Dress-Up Day, and a Silent Auction. Leadership students will be making the paracord bracelets in class and sending them to an organization called Operation Gratitude who will place each bracelet in care packages for our troops.
FBLA Community Service Project: On Saturday, December 5th, students participated in the Walk 'n' Knock community service project. They went around the community collecting non-perishable food items and donating it to people who are in need.
Marketing Internship Opportunity: Mrs. Ruff is currently working on minor details for an internship opportunity for her marketing students. The partnership is with Stacy Smuin Agency for Farmers Insurance. It will be a paid internship with bonus opportunities. The internship will begin second semester. Students will be able to use the marketing and sales skills they have learned in class in a real world, work environment. This will also be a great work experience to put on their resumes.
Skills USA making a difference: Students did work at the park and ride for Make a Difference Day. Students also offered free babysitting during the snowflake Bazaar as another community service opportunity. Skills USA club members have been selling Papa Murphy's pizza cards (although not very successfully) as a fund raiser and plan to do the 50/50 at two basketball games. Creative chef students (many of whom are in Skills USA) catered a dinner for the Port of Woodland and for the Regional WAVA Breakfast. Recently FFA and Skills USA teamed together to go out for Pizza and a Winterhawks game. In November they also attended the regional Skills USA kick off at Fort Vancouver. Currently we are in the process of signing up for regional competitions and putting together resumes.
HOSA puts on a bazaar: Mrs. Cullison’s HOSA club put on the Snowflake Bazaar on November 21st. They had over 70 vendors participate. Santa made an appearance and took pictures with children and the Jazz Choir also sang carols. NHS and Free the Children students also volunteered their time to help make this event a success. This event is a major fundraiser for HOSA to help pay for the costs for students to compete in both the state and national leadership conferences.
Students are getting first aid certification: Medical Science students are learning CPR/First Aid for healthcare providers. Each student has the opportunity to obtain a two year certification and 1 credit from Clark College for successful completion of the training.
Burgers for a great cause: HOSA will be hosting a Burgerville Partnership Night on January 20th from 4-8pm. We hope that you can stop by to help support our club.
Shop classes learning new skills: In the welding classes students are learning CAD (computer aided design) and are transferring the projects to our CNC (computer numerical control) plasma table. Students are also learning how to use the mill and lathe for metal working. Students in Maritime Trades have winterized a boat, worked on outboard motors (changed water pump impellers, gear lube, tune ups), and they will also be pulling a motor and jet pump out of a boat. The automotive class replaced brake shoes, pads, rotors, and drums on a variety of vehicles, plus troubleshooting electrical problems, and basic service items (engine oil and filter, transmission service, coolant service, etc.).
FFA giving back: FFA partnered with our Skills USA club to clean up Hoffman Plaza – it was a great day. Mrs. Vetter held a community wreath decorating class on Thursday, December 3rd that was well attended. FFA members have also been working on promoting healthy activities.
Robotics moving on to state: Our middle school robotics team qualified for the state tournament in January!
