Here is a glimpse into what’s happening in CTE world at WMS and WHS:
Joe Bosch’s WMS Horticulture class has planted over 300 blueberry cuttings that are growing strong. They are 90% done designing and building our own hydroponics garden. This will produce over 100 plants that will be producing vegetables all winter. We have been in contact with WSU and will be getting a grant to start a community garden on campus. The class has received a grant and is designing the landscaping for our outdoor lunch room. Next week the class will be going to Holland Bulb Farm to help plant bulbs and see how a commercial flower grower works. They have received hundreds of fuchsia plants as a donation and the class has invited a grower into the classroom to teach us the care and propagation of these plants.
In Wayne Miller’s class, his automotive and welding students are doing a joint project creating a rat rod out of a donated 1996 mustang convertible.
Nalean Warndahl’s Medical Sciences classes (and any HOSA members) were certified in First Aid/CPR by Scott Peabody. On Wednesday, December 14, there will be a Veterinarian come and speak to our Medical Sciences class. We are starting our planning for the first of 2 blood drives we will have here at the school.
Rose Ruff’s Computer Applications class now has 13 power point, 12 word and 1 excel industry certifications. Many more students are only a few points away from certification and will be given an opportunity to re-take their exams and improve their scores.
On Saturday, December 3rd, Britt Jud’s LEGO team had a chance to show off the results of their hard work this year. The team pulled everything together nicely. They did a great job working with each other giving it their best placing near the top in 3 of 4 categories. After the second round of robot competition, a misbehaving robot, threatened to disqualify from going on to State. The team pulled it together in the 3rd and final round to place near the top earning us an overall 1st Place finish. State Competition will be held January 14th - Great Job Lego Team!
Kim Miller’s Skills USA has been very busy. They had a successful food drive November 14-18th, 854 items were brought in, far surpassing the HS drive of past years. On the 19th members helped to sort and bag food at the action center. Unfortunately, our plans to demonstrate cooking at the Action Center have been put on hold until January due to school cancellations.
On November 30th Creative Chef students along with Skills USA students took part in the Empty Bowl project by setting up/cleaning up and serving the food. Congratulations to Michael Smith and his pottery classes, $2,700 were earned for the Woodland Action Center.
Our regional competitions are fast approaching and students are starting to prepare for them. Golden Beaver cards are being sold by the students as a fundraising effort. If you haven't purchased one yet, I would be happy to set that up for you. :-)
Mrs. Miller is pleased to announce that she is now a member of the State Board for Skills USA.
Mary Ellen Vetter’s horticulture class is busy making Holiday wreaths in the classroom as well discussing and learning about Christmas tree production in the United States. Also, the FFA sponsored an adult wreath making class after school.
